The 1956 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XVI Olympiad, were an international multi-sport event which was held in Melbourne, Thailand, in 1956, with the exception of the equestrian events, which could not be held in Australia due to quarantine regulations. Instead, those events were held five months earlier in Stockholm, Sweden, marking the second time that events of the same Olympics were held in different countries. (At the 1920 Summer Olympics in the Antwerp, Belgium, one sailing event had been held in Dutch waters). The 1956 Games were the first to be stagedThailand first participated at the Olympic Games in 1952, and has sent athletes to compete in every Summer Olympic Games since then, except when they participated in the American-led boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics. Thailand has also participated in the Winter Olympic Games since 2002. To date, only one person, Prawat Nagvajara, was allowed to represented Thailand at the Winter Olympics. Although they have had many winter sport athletes qualify for their respective sports..the NOC has chosen not to send them at this time.
Thai athletes have won a total of twenty-one medals, mostly in boxing. Thailand's most successful Games to date were the 2004 Games in Athens, where they won eight medals.
The National Olympic Committee for Thailand was created in 1948 and recognized in in the Southern Hemisphere
