Olymics 2016

Last Friday ended the IOC’s tours of the 4 bid Cities. The final globetrotting stop was Madrid. This bid city already has a whopping 77% of its Olympic Venues in place or under construction which includes their aquatic center and Olympic Stadium. Obviously, that puts this bid city ahead of the game when compared to the other 3 host cities. IOC commissioner called the venues and plans in Madrid “magnificent” which was a change from the “most impressed” that was given for the other 3 cities. It looks like Madrid is pulling ahead on the leader board.
The IOC plans on doing an assessment of the risks in each city if they were to hold the games, before the final decision in October. But Chicago has one last chance to impress the IOC board on June 17th & 18th at a briefing in Switzerland. Here the bid cities have the opportunity to impress all 107 IOC voters who have been invited. This is the first briefing meeting in the history of the Olympics and was put in place to fill the gaps that voters were not aware of in the bid cities.
Chicago has a lot of votes to lobby over the next five months, but can they convince the IOC that Chicago is the city for the 2016 games? I think Chicago has a lot of competition with Madrid’s venues and housing plans but Chicago is one of a kind and I am sure they will make that known to the committee!

cop cheer with bir students

There appear to be only two likely winning cities in the 2016 race, being Chicago and Rio. It will have been 20 years since the summer Olympics were in the US or the Western Hemisphere. The timing is right for Chicago.Second, the Chicago plan is a wonderful display of their lakefront. So many venues are along the lakefront that the Olympics will not overwhelm the city like the event does in so many other cities. And other than the new stadium, the rest of the venues are either pretty much already in place or needed whether or not the city gets the games. Therefore, Chicago is a great choice for the games.

My Opinion

Based upon the poll result we atleast hope that Chicago is going to win the 2016 bid, but as we discussed in the class it may be not true. Winning the bid is totally based on the preparation of the candidate city. Lets hope Chicago is winning the bid.

Can Chicago be a good Olympic host city?

I think it will be between Chicago and Rio. For Chicago to get the olympics in 2016, they will have to be selected by the USOC as the US host city. Rio is having some trouble at the moment with Pan American Games. However, if they have a sucressful games it will help them in their bid to host 2016 Olympics. The applications to the International Olympic Committee are due by September 15, 2007. International pundits believe that the host city will most likely be in North America because cities from Asia, Australia and Europe have been selected as hosts for the four most recent Olympic Games. The front-runners of the North American selection are seen to be Chicago and Los Angeles, unless, that is, Latin America, Africa, Southeast Asia or the Middle East - areas that have never hosted the Olympic Games (with the exception of the 1968 Mexico City Olympic Games) - can convince the International Olympic Committee otherwise. On September 1, 2006 Rio de Janeiro was named by the Brazilian Olympic Committee as an applicant for the 2016 Games. The city is now preparing to play host to the 2007 Pan American Games, which will be the key proving ground for an Olympic bid. [citation needed] Rio de Janeiro launched applications to host the 2004 and 2012 Olympics, but failed to make the shortlist on both occasions. If the 2007 PAG turns out to be a logistical success, it may propel Rio de Janeiro as a serious contender when the bidding cycle for the 2016 Olympic Games begin. Furthermore, the IOC is eager to have either South America or Africa host the games. Brazil has had experienced in organizing large-scale sporting events in the past: Brazil organized and hosted the 1950 FIFA World Cup and is organizing a bid to host the 2014 event, and São Paulo organized the 4th Pan American Games in 1963. Subsequently, due to the continental rotation policy taken by FIFA that will place the 2014 FIFA World Cup in South America, CONMEBOL has unanimously nominated Brazil as its candidate to host the 2014 FIFA World Cup, with FIFA making its final decision sometime in 2008. São Paulo, Brasília and Curitiba have also mentioned that want to make a bid [citation needed], therefore, the Brazilian Olympic Committee may have to choose between these four cities. The features to Rio 2007 has a big structure that includes a big stadium called João Havelange, that you can see in this site.

chicago would make a good olympics host city

Mayor Daley made a joke about the Chinese spending all the billions on the olympics . So i guess it would't be something big. Besides Chicago disent have enough money to build infrastructure for the olymipc and the only solutions is raising taxes like they doing right now chicago is going to be depopulated.

The sport and competition, young can learn valuble lessons and develop skills that will serve them will througtant their lives.
Through sport and competition, young people can learn valuable lessons and develop skills that will serve them well throughout their lives. Chicago 2016 created World Sport Chicago as a living legacy organization whose mission is to expose Chicago youth to sport. By working with the Chicago Park District on existing programs and by establishing an Urban Youth Sport Initiative to provide new opportunities for young athletes to participate in sport, Chicago 2016 and World Sport Chicago have already had a real impact on the city. In January 2009, the U.S. Conference of Mayors, an organization with 1,200 mayors from across the United States, endorsed Chicago’s bid and established an Olympic Task Force to expand these sport programs to other U.S. cities.

Tokyo Officially Announces 2016 BidFriday, April 28, 2006Tokyo has officially announced it plans to bid for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games competing with Fukuoka to be Japan’s candidate.Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara told a news conference, “by compiling an excellent project plan, we want to prepare well thought-out strategies and clear the domestic competition. We then want to win the battle against strong rivals elsewhere in the world”.According to the plan most of the sporting venues would be concentrated within a 10-kilometre radius of the city with the main stadium to be constructed at Harumi Pier near Tokyo’s Rainbow Bridge.A media centre and athletes’ accommodation will be built on Tokyo’s waterfront area alongside Tokyo Bay, said Ishihara. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will choose the sole Japanese candidate on August 30.

The Madrid 2016 Olympic

1. what does the logo represent?

The logo is named "Corle" and represents a hand in the colors of the Olympics, welcoming foreigners to the games. The silhouette of an 'M', representing Madrid, is also hidden in the hand. It was designed by an Argentine, Joaquin Malle. The initial design was merely an outline of the hand; the final version bursts with color rings within the hand.

2.Can this city win the bid in october? why or why not?

This city can be win the bid because Madrid enjoys extremely high levels of support from its citizens. A recent poll put Madrid's support levels at 92.6% and the bid already has 25,000 volunteers signed up. Madrid 2016 also has over 60 corporate sponsors.

3. What does city have that attract you the most as the Olympic Commitee?

They have the great competition venues for the Games would be in two main clusters.
The Eastern zone would be the location of the Olympic Stadium, Aquatic Centre, and the Olympic Village, as well as the Telefónica Arena (called before Madrid Arena and earlier Rockódromo de Casa de Campo, will hold basketball events) and the IFEMA Fairgrounds (eight sports plus the Press Center).
The River Zone aside the Manzanares River would host the venues for rowing, beach volleyball, archery, cycling, tennis, modern pentathlon, triathlon, equestrian and rhythmic gymnastics. After the games, the river bank will become a public park celebrating sport, culture and music.
The city is currently completing new swimming and tennis venues (Caja Mágica - The Magic Box) and looking to expand and modernize existing sporting facilities.Bernabeu, and Estadio La Peineta are likely venues should Madrid win the games. A new center for sport with the aim of improving facilities for disabled athletes will also be created as part of the push for the Paralympic Games.
