
Tokyo Officially Announces 2016 BidFriday, April 28, 2006Tokyo has officially announced it plans to bid for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games competing with Fukuoka to be Japan’s candidate.Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara told a news conference, “by compiling an excellent project plan, we want to prepare well thought-out strategies and clear the domestic competition. We then want to win the battle against strong rivals elsewhere in the world”.According to the plan most of the sporting venues would be concentrated within a 10-kilometre radius of the city with the main stadium to be constructed at Harumi Pier near Tokyo’s Rainbow Bridge.A media centre and athletes’ accommodation will be built on Tokyo’s waterfront area alongside Tokyo Bay, said Ishihara.The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will choose the sole Japanese candidate on August 30.
